9-box mapping is a popular methodology used in assessing current talent and mapping for the future. Staff are rated on a 3 point scale for their potential & performance. Then they are plotted in a 3x3 grid (9 box) to see who sits where. From the results, you can suggest individual employee next steps (including development or job role changes), assess how departments are comprised to ensure their is the appropriate level of talent and growth in case of employee turnover, determine what departments/job levels require more dedication to employee development. It is recommended to complete this talent mapping assessment yearly or at any points of extreme growth or reduction.
